Hide it or Crop it

This great photo by _Astroscape_ on Reddit Photocritique, which was taken during a shoot of the car in the middle was looked at by most comments as really being a shot of the Chateau.

Then the car becomes a distraction so needs to be removed by cropping or compositing. These were done quickly, especially the compositing which isn’t much good, maintaining the original aspect ratio.

Please tell us how you see them in a comment – ranking 1 to 4 would be mice.

Possible Edits of a Great Photograph

Changing the aspect ratio and cropping alter the character of this brilliant photograph by SurrealHallucination on Reddit. Of course there are many different aspect ratios and cropping possible – here are a few I like.

By the way I expanded the image using Snapped on iPad before cropping.

Standout Photos 4 – A Housefront in Cluny

I’m trying to understand what makes images that stand out for me unlike this one and whether this is the same for everyone.

I have many photographs of old buildings in the cathedral town of Cluny in various states of repair and a range of finishes – this one seems to stand out. Is it because I took time to cut out all perspectives and cropping in on detail rather than getting the whole house, is it the colours or the shear ordinariness of the subject?

Cropping and healing the foreground changes the character of the photo – depends if you like the new look and if you can do without the ice.

Stand Out Photos 3

AUDRA by Sheldon Serkin

Pretty pointless nondescript water drops on glass in front of a small (1%of photo) black figure, bang in the middle of the frame. Very little to see besides the drops due to mist on the glass or in the surroundings.

What makes this a standout is the red umbrella the person carries and their evident battle to get out of the rain.

Stand Out Photographs 2

I’m trying to understand what makes images that stand out for me unlike this one and whether this is the same for everyone.

I’m sure this is a much more interesting photograph of a Junglescape than SOP1 from a botanical, adventurer or nature study point of view, but as a photograph it is very mundane. Not a standout.

Standout Photos 1

I’m trying to understand what makes images that stand out for me like this one and whether this is the same for everyone.

For me its the softness, maybe from the small range of colours or the misty background and the variety of shapes and diameter of the tall trees. The foreground doesn’t help at all to me.

Slow Photography

Here is a photograph that fits in the “long time in taking” category, definitely not a “decisive moment”.

My French drivers license!

At last I have my French drivers license, three years after the photograph was exposed!

There is in fact a “Slow Photography Movement” where people are not into snapping using burst mode on their digital cameras, but rather focus on working slower, the physical aspects of the photograph and documentation that extends the story of the image.

One photographer apparently uses film cameras only and waits several months before developing the film so as to extend the process. I can not locate source information on this at present so would appreciate feedback from anyone who knows about this.

Henri Cartier Bresson is known for focusing on the “Decisive Moment” when subject, photographer and equipment all came together at the instant of pressing the shutter to create a unique image.

I personally prefer something in the middle, although I have found myself taking several shots of what looks like a good image just in case they are better than my first attempt.

This looks rather dull on the blog so to lighten it up here is the current free image from my poster site.
